That 1789 Feeling

Jean Claude after one too many

What the hell is up with Jean Claude Juncker? Is he coked out of his head or drunk, or both? What else could it be when Trump’s European opposite number goes out of his way to insult and humiliate the next US president?

In just a one minute on Trump the European Commission President:

• Calls the future head of the world’s most powerful country stupid.

• Calls the head of Europe’s most important trading partner ignorant.

• Mocks the guarantor of European security.

• Slurs him as a racist

• Offers to educate the US president-elect.

Even if there were any truth in Juncker’s caricature of Trump, why would the head of enfeebled and dependent Europe on the edge of bankruptcy goad the future US leader? Is that in the interests of EU citizens?

And while we’re on the subject I don’t remember Juncker using such derogatory language to describe any of the legion despots and communist dictators he gets to deal with in his job.

But as I said, maybe he was stoned? But no. We’ve seen Juncker stoned and it looks like this:

Curiously enough, the media don’t seem too fired up by this incredible clip of Juncker behaving worse than the worst caricature of Trump on steroids.

Who knows how Trump will behave as president. Quite frankly electing a reality TV star is likely to result in the odd faux pas or two. But I bet that Trump doesn’t disgrace the office with anything like as embarrassing a display of arrogance and coarseness as Juncker showed here to the Hungarian prime minister.

So it seems that Juncker wasn’t stoned. He really thinks that the next US president is a sort of fascistic buffoon. But as to why he thinks he can get away with such an outrageous slur to Europe’s indispensible ally. My own take is that he feels free to slander Trump because everyone he knows agrees with him.

There’s a 1789 feel to European politics right now. Most European leaders are resolute in only one thing: their determination to ignore the reality of a Europe on the edge of the abyss.

Take, Anne Hidalgo, the Mayor of Paris, [Please!]. As she so eloquently puts it ‘Mr Trump is so stupid! My God’. Here’s a woman whose city is on a war footing and fast becoming as famous for terrorist atrocity as it formerly was for arsehole waiters and pissoirs. But despite that she is clearly a lot more worked up over the democratic election of Trump than having hundreds of her voters butchered on the streets of Paris by Muslim fanatics.

Then there’s Angela Merkel, who for her part has firmly told Trump that she’s only willing to let America continue to protect Germany for free if he will join her suicide pact. I paraphrase, but that seems to be the gist:

This is the woman who with one eye on Germany’s demographic death spiral decided to play Lady Bountiful to all those unfortunate (aggressive, malevolent) ‘Syrian refugees’. The upshot is that last year the German police recorded 200,000 crimes committed by these new guests and in the first 6 months of this year the figue already topped 142,000. As there is mounting evidence of just how reluctant the German police are even to record these crimes, it seems likely that the true number of crimes committed far exceeds the number of migrants let in. Has there ever been a migrant flow like this that wasn’t described as an invasion? And yet Merkel wants Trump to screw up America in the same way or she’ll shun Germany’s most important ally.

Actually, you know what. I wish they were all stoned.

If European leaders remain as intent on ignoring reality a Louis XVI was, how long can it be before our modern Sun King has a similar conversation as a duke had with his predecessor:

Juncker – ‘Is it a revolt?’

Lackey – ‘No sire, it is not a revolt. It’s a revolution!’
